The distance that worked for me was 130u, a substantial distance. I have to fiddle with the positioning a bit before the pad turns green and can be attached. The landing pad will snap to the door, but if you want an open air bridge to the pad, add a basic wall at the end with door then snap the pad to it. Then delete the wall and fill the gap with a basic floor panel. Edit: If you snap to a door that you keep, you should get the landing pad extension.
